Please join SIRR at Columbia University School of Law for our screening of abUSed: The Postville Raid, and post-screening discussion with Director and Producer Luis Argueta. This film is about the infamous Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid of a kosher slaughterhouse (Agriprocessors, Inc.) in Postville, Iowa. At this raid nearly 400 non-citizens (a huge percentage of the town with a population of only 2,200 people) were arrested and charged with identity theft and document fraud. This raid was infamous for the many due process violations that occurred, because of the many workers' rights violations that occurred in the factory, and the many lawsuits that resulted both against ICE and Agriprocessors for the treatment of the non-citizen workers either before or during the raids. Luis Argueta, in the film, follows the plight of the non-citizens during their criminal and immigration cases; the deportees to their countries of origin after deportation; the families and communities left behind; the congressional hearings after the raid; and the lawsuits that resulted from this raid. The film runs for 97 minutes and discussion with Luis Argueta will follow immediately after the film.
